State Water Project Chaohu Lake Contamination Management and Eutrophication Comprehensive Control Technology and Demonstration Project Achieving Staged Success

Since the start of 11th Five-year plan water project, Chaohu Lake contamination management and eutrophication comprehensive control technology and demonstration project in 2008, with the joint efforts of undertaking entity, National Key Lab on Limnology and Environment in Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology and the responsible people of the project, work of current stage in each project is successfully completed. Some achievements have been made which lay a good foundation for the accomplishment of Chaohu Lake project.

Considering the reoccurrence of eutrophication and cyanobacterial bloom in drinking water area in eastern of Chaohu Lake, key technology research and ecological restoration demonstration projects are established to control the water contamination and water environment restoration in water resources lake area. The demonstration subjects about lake and river water contamination management in which the industrial pollutants are involved in and ecological restoration technology includes the following work: geological and topographic survey, sampling and analyzing of polluted bottom sediment, pollution source investigation and analysis, demonstration project trial and location selection & preliminary design of demonstration project. All the scheduled projects this year are completed. For subjects on the influence and control technology of natural bottom nutrients towards the eutrophication of Chaohu Lake water body and demonstration projects, 4 joint investigations have been conducted, 15 independent investigation by each unit. As a result, large quantities of first hand information are collected and the research base is formally used, more than 80 people have come to work on the base successively. For subjects on improvement of lake vertical bank bottom and ecosystem restoration technology and demonstration, projects conducted are: eastern lake area and western lake area are involved in the ecosystem restoration technology and demonstration in lake water, vertical bank bottom improvement and ecological bank restoration technology in water and lake ecological restoration and contaminated water management technology in lake water. Test design has been accomplished, test place confirmed and construction of lake test field finished, to be put into use. For subject Chaohu Lake water resources protected area physics-ecology purification and water quality guarantee technology and demonstration, complete investigation on the water body in water resources area and pollutants in bottom sediments, and traced the origin. Subjects group people have made one boat to fish cyanophytes, a gas curtain under water to hold up cyanobacterial bloom, and layered water sample collector , one of which have been granted. Test on water plant culture indoor and test on indoor waste water strengthening purification have been conducted, the preliminary design of restoration scheme on concave bank and bay ecology, the preliminary design of water quality adjustment scheme. Reliable data has been obtained through the survey, background investigation and analysis. The water contamination control and ecology & environmental management technical scheme has been detailed and adjusted. The investigation on water contamination system which mainly focus on the water quality and hydrology of lake area and main rivers to the lake, main pollution source in basin, and social and economic condition in basin has been in full swing. Chaohu lake ecological environment site observation laboratory has been basically completed to further research the circulation of nutrition factors in basin and further research ecological dynamic model. The management, decision and support system for Chaohu Lake water contamination also are entering development phase. The subjects have been or to be put into commissioning in the observation field along Chaohu Lake. And Contract has been signed regarding such subjects between Chaohu Lake environment monitoring station and the third party to completely monitor the implementation result of demonstration projects.

Since the implementation of this project, the comments and suggestions from relevant departments such as local environmental protection, water conservation, construction and agriculture etc in Chaohu Lake are fully respected. Meetings were held on March 7th and August 31st respectively with presence of relevant local departments and technicians for communication and coordination, gradually detailing and perfecting the research and working method. Local environmental department fully confirms the function and feasibility of demonstration project to be implemented in contamination control and management in Chaohu Lake, confirms the implementation location, scale and place requirements of each demonstration project and points out the issues to be paid attention to during the detailed implementation process of the demonstration project, making valuable suggestions. Smooth information channel has been established between project group and local government department. At present, the implementation of project is going smoothly. Local government department establishes designated coordination group to help the interfacing between the research group and relevant departments, solving the problems encountered during the implementation of the project. The establishment of this mechanism is of great help to the research on projects and smooth implementation of the demonstration project. Anhui government and Chaohu government has matched some parts according to the schedule of projects. The project group is cooperating with Department of Environmental Protection of Anhui Province, actively preparing the reporting materials, trying to successfully get the corresponding fund for demonstration project from Anhui government to ensure the implementation and accomplishment of the project and enhancing the contamination management and eutrophication control in Chaohu Lake.
