Water-quality and Algal-bloom Forecast and Early-warning System (WAFES) was Released a the First Qiandao Lake Forum (QLF)
WAFES for Qiandao Lake was released at the First QLF which was successfully held in Chun’an, China during 9-11 November 2019. The system has been developed by Prof. Boqiang Qin’s research team from Nanjing Institute of Geography & Limnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (NIGLAS) collaborating with Jiangxi Bowei New Technology Co., Ltd., Suzhou Zhongke Tianqi Remote Sensing Technology Co., Ltd., Hangzhou Research Institute of Environmental Sciences and Chun'an Environmental Monitoring Station. The new system has been reported at the main Chinese medias such as CCTV, CHINA DAILY, CNR, CHINANEWS etc.

On the QLF Summit, the system was activated by Professor Guibin Jiang (Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences), Professor Lizhong Zhu (Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering), Professor Boqiang Qin, Wei Hu (Vice Mayor of Hangzhou Municipal People’s Government), Haifeng Huang (Party Secretary of Chun'an County), and Heidelore Fiedler (Consultant of the United Nations Environment Programme). WAFES will play a key role on protecting water environment and promoting water safety for Qiandao Lake which is mainly supplying drinking water for Yangtze River Delta.
The water quality and algal bloom forecast and early-warning system for Qiandao Lake officially launched
The system integrates multiple technologies including high frequency automatic monitoring, remote sensing image interpretation, hydrological modelling and three dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality simulations. The system, as a decision support platform, has two functions: 1) monitoring the real-time lake surface water quality, 2) predicting the lake water quality for three days. The system automatically runs at a user-specified time every day. An early warning and prediction report will be automatically generated based on the model simulations and automatic plotting of model outputs. Government departments can not only know the current situation and a changing trend of water quality of Qiandao Lake but also launch emergency response plans for sudden water environment incidents.
