Signing of the Cooperation Memorandum between NIGLAS and Institute of Geology of Polish Academy of Sciences

Signing of the Cooperation Memorandum between Nanjing Institute of Geography & Limnology of CAS and Institute of Geology of Polish Academy of Sciences

On September 19th, Nanjing Institute of Geography & Limnology(NIGLAS) and Institute of Geology of Polish Academy of Sciences signed the cooperation memorandum. The two sides agreed to conduct comprehensive cooperation in cooperative research, conference organization, personnel exchange, project coordination, and student training, and focus on research on lake ecosystems and global changes, lake wetland carbon storage, and water and soil basin erosion. Yaping Zhang, the deputy director of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and others witnessed the signing ceremony of NIGLAS director Professor Ganlin Zhang and Professor Arek Derkowski, the executive director of the Polish Institute of Geology.

Founded in 1956, Institute of Geology of Polish Academy of Sciences is the center of geological science in Poland, including Warsaw, Krakow and other three sub-centers. It has five laboratories: stable isotope laboratory, uranium laboratory, environmental change-climate and paleohuman laboratory, earthquake interpretation and basin analysis laboratory, and process record of mineral rock genetic laboratory. The institutes are fully equipped. The main research areas include sedimentology, Quaternary geology, paleoecology, isotope geochemistry (geological chronology), mineralogy, petrology, tectonic, stratigraphy and hydrogeology. In particular, the paleoecological project team has a good research foundation in the aspects of zooplankton, phytoplankton, food network structure, etc., and has published many scientific research results. Specially, the work of “Atlas of Subfossil Cladocera from Central and Northern Europe” provides a reference standard for the identification of cladoceran microfossils. Professor Szeroczyńska, the leader of the project team, is a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award of the International Paloimnology Society. He has long-term accumulation in the research of palolimnology and marshes, especially in the field of temperate and deep-water lakes.

The Institute and the Institute of Geology of the Polish Academy of Sciences plan to carry out cooperation and comparative research on multidisciplinary and different types of lakes in the future, and deepen the understanding of the process mechanism of the lake system under damage, which it is significant to predict the future ecological environment of the lake and governance lake environment.

During the visit to Poland, NIGLAS director Ganlin Zhang, and Bin Xue, deputy director of the State Key Laboratory of Lake Science and Environment, accompanied deputy dean, Yaping Zhang and Zhenyu Wang, the deputy director the International Cooperation Bureau to take tourist tour Polish Academy of Sciences, In-depth exchanges were conducted on the bilateral cooperation and enhancement of the two academies of science.
