Science News reports a recent NIGLAS findings on its issue published on November 23, 2011. The article Lakes are warming across the globe—In China, climate warming may be pushing some lakes to extinction introduces a recent finding by Dr. Ronghua Ma and his colleagues at NIGLAS which was published November 24 in Geophysical Research Letters.
The study by Dr. Ronghua Ma and his colleagues in Nanjing has mapped changes in the existence and size of 2,938 lakes throughout China. They compared data collected between the 1960s and ’80s with others from the mid-2000s., found that not only a 13 percent reduction in China’s overall surface area covered by lakes but also a vanishing of almost 250 discrete water bodies.
