Dr. Yang Guishan

Dr. Yang Guishan, a research fellow born in Xinghua, Jiangsu in August 1965, works as the director of Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences now.

He was graduated from the Dept. of Geography, Nanjing University (now the School of Geographic and Oceanographic Sciences) in 1987, obtaining the Bachelor’s Degree of Science; and, in the same year, he began to work for Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, respectively receiving the Master’s Degree of Science in 1993 and the Doctor’s Degree of Science in 1997. He has been mainly engaged in the research on use of regional resources, ecological protection, coastal environmental change and regional response, and integrated watershed management, etc.

At present, he is director of Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a research fellow and a doctoral tutor. He is also an adjunct professor in Nanjing University, standing director of China Geographical Society, director of the Branch of the Yangtze River Society, standing director of the China Institute of Natural Resources and deputy director of the Special Committee of Sustainable Resources and Disaster Mitigation. He is also a member of the Committee of Taihu Lake Water Pollution Prevention, Jiangsu Province, and a member of the Advisory Committee of Economic and Social Development of Shanghai Municipality, that of Nanjing Municipality, and that of Wuxi Municipality, etc. At the same time, he also serves as an editorial member of Geographical Science,Journal of Lake Sciences, and Resources and Environment in the Yangtze Basin and other scholarly journals.

His research fields include: resource utilization and ecological environment effect, wetland evolution and ecological protection.He has ever successively won the National First Award for Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation, the Seventh National Youth Award for Geography and Technology, etc. In 2002, Dr. Yang was admitted to The Leading Talents of Science and Technology for the New Century of Jiangsu Province (333 Project, Level 2) .

He has been author of more than 150 articles and the first author of over 50 articles, and editor in chief of 6 academic monographs.

 

Academic Contributions:

1, Long term engagement in process, mechanism and effect of land use / cover change . His researches reveal the temporal and spatial variation of land use and its relationship with stages of economic development in China’s eastern economically developed areas for almost 50 years for the first time, basically clarify the impact of watershed land use / cover change on the water environment, water-related disasters and ecosystem services mechanism.

2, Continuous attention to the problem of regional development resources and environment coordination. His research has made systematical investigations on resources utilization status and level of developmental conditions of the Yangtze River from Yichang to the estuary shoreline; his research makes clear the minimum area of cultivated land and ecological protection from a perspective of balance of regional food supply and protection of important ecological functional areas in the Yangtze River Delta for the first time. Dr. Yang and his collogues completed Regional Planning for Yangtze River Delta which has been promulgated by the Executive Council of the State Council. He has also carried out systematic and strategic researches on hot issues in Yangtze River including water resources, water environment, water-related disasters and water ecology and other problems related to basin economic developments,. He has also presided over the compilation of series reports of Protection and Development of Yangtze River which have brought broad social responses.

3, Research accumulation in wetland evolution and ecological protection. His research has revealed the typical muddy tidal flat wetland form, characteristics of ecological evolution and its response to sea-level changes, and has developed methods of vulnerability assessment of wetlands under coastal environmental change.
