He has been author of more than 150 articles and the first author of over 50 articles, and editor in chief of 6 academic monographs.
1, Long term engagement in process, mechanism and effect of land use / cover change . His researches reveal the temporal and spatial variation of land use and its relationship with stages of economic development in China’s eastern economically developed areas for almost 50 years for the first time, basically clarify the impact of watershed land use / cover change on the water environment, water-related disasters and ecosystem services mechanism.
2, Continuous attention to the problem of regional development resources and environment coordination. His research has made systematical investigations on resources utilization status and level of developmental conditions of the Yangtze River from Yichang to the estuary shoreline; his research makes clear the minimum area of cultivated land and ecological protection from a perspective of balance of regional food supply and protection of important ecological functional areas in the Yangtze River Delta for the first time. Dr. Yang and his collogues completed Regional Planning for Yangtze River Delta which has been promulgated by the Executive Council of the State Council.
