On July 24, Dr. Rashid Tamatamah, Director General of Tanzania Fisheries Research Institute (TAFIRI) officially visited NIGLAS. Prof. SHEN Ji, Director General of NIGLAS, Prof. Xue Bing, Assistant to Director General, Zhang Lu, Director of Technology Department, Yang Lei, Deputy Director of Technology Department and Prof. Chen Shuang, Chief Scientist of NIGLAS-Tanzania Cooperation Project, attended the meeting.
Prof. SHEN Ji warmly welcomed Dr.Rashid Tamatamah and his visiting group. He reviewed the cooperation course between NIGLAS and TAFIRI, and briefly introduced history, organization, subject area, research group, platform construction and international cooperation situation of NIGLAS. Dr.Rashid Tamatamah gave the overall introduction of TAFIRI, and proposed that the two institutes can develop the cooperation in the research fields like urban ecology and water quality, aquatic agriculture, lake and fishery, research of great lakes, etc. The two institutes are both satisfied with the current cooperation, and reached agreement on expanding the areas and deepening the level of existing cooperation. The two institutes will promote the monitoring and safe keeping of catchment water environment, and develop the cooperation in the areas of management and exploitation of lake resources.
During the meeting, Prof. Chen Shuang made the report about the construction progress of “Joint Research Station for East African Great Lake and Urban Ecology (EAGLUE)”. Both sides are satisfied with the smooth construction progress of the research station, and believe that it will offer a strong guarantee to the scientific research work of NIGLAS. Prof. Shen Ji and Dr.Rashid Tamatamah jointly titled EAGLUE, and representing CAS, Prof. Shen Ji awarded the Employment Certificate of CAS International Visiting Scholar to Dr. Ishmael. A. Kimirei, Director of TAFIRI KIGOMA Center.
TAFIRI is affiliated to the Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries Ministry of Tanzania. It is the most important national research organization in the fishery and water environment research area of Tanzania. TAFIRI has established sound cooperative relationship with NIGLAS since the year of 2008. Both sides have conducted fruitful collaborative research work especially on the catchment of East African Great Lake.
