April 16, 2014, a ceremony was held at NIGLAS for Prof. Ben Derudder who had been approved to be supported by the program of Visiting Professorship for Senior International Scientists which is aimed to welcome the most talented oversea scientists to work in CAS for at least 2 months and up to 12 months. On the ceremony, Prof. Duan Xuejun, Associate Director of NIGLAS, awarded a the Official certificate to Prof. Ben Derudder on behalf ot CAS. Over 20 scholars and students from NIGLAS attended the ceremony.
After the ceremony, Prof. Ben Derudder gave a lecture on “Measurement and interpretation of the position of Chinese cities in the world city network, 2000-13”. His presentation focused on the connotation and the construction of the Global City Network. Then he provided a brief introduction to the Chinese cities in the world city network, 2000-13 and polycentric development in China’s world cities. At last, some scholars and students of our institute put forward several academic problems and talked with him warmly.
Ben Derudder is a Professor of Human Geography in the Department of Geography at Ghent University (Belgium). He has (co-)edited 4 books on world city network-formation, and published several scientific papers on this topic in key academic journals. During the period 2011-2014, he is a Marie Curie Research Fellow, associated with Monash University in Australia. He joined GaWC in 2002. In his GaWC-related research, he has broadly focused on (1) the potential of alternative network specifications of the world city network, and (2) modeling change and co-evolution in the world city network. This research is recorded in a number of papers in major journals, including Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers, Urban Studies, Regional Studies, Journal of Transport Geography, and Environment and Planning A/B. Now he is a senior international scientist who got a visiting professorship in CAS, he will cooperate with Prof.Duan and his research team in the next 12months.
